Farmer Training

Promoting Food Security and Sustainability

Our Farmer Training program helps small-scale farmers improve their productivity and income by providing them with the tools to grow nutritious foods in a sustainable way.

The program embraces both innovative and traditional farming methods to guide local farmers through practical and theoretical skill-building.

Watch CEO and President Khayanga Wasike describe WHISCA’s Farmer Training program.

 Did you know?

Small-scale farmers make up 95% of Lugari’s population.

Since 2010, over 300 farmers have graduated from our program.

Over one year, local farmers meet weekly in small groups to receive training and support in an agricultural project of their choosing.

Participants graduate from the program with an official diploma and new connections made within a network of farmers across the community and country.

Food security is a priority for WHISCA.

Our training encourages local farmers to build a sustainable farming practice so they can support themselves and their families.

Thriving farmers mean a thriving community.

Participants in our program take away…

  • Evidence-based decision making and goal setting

  • Knowledge on farming technologies to improve agricultural sustainability

  • Good harvesting and preservation practices

  • Strategies of “Agribusiness” — seeing small-scale farming as a business venture

Farmers Field Day

Every August, our centre holds a Farmers Field Day where local farmers can exhibit the culmination of a year’s work.

  • Products range from produce and livestock to hand-woven baskets and beadwork

  • Professional organizations like the Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries exhibit and meet with local farmers

  • Attending farmers learn about modern production methods and build networks within the larger community

Planting Seeds of Self-Reliance

Stories from Lugari Farmers

WHISCA’s partnership with the Kenya Seed Company has brought hybrid seeds to Lugari farmers and boosted both crop yield and income.

WilFridah, a local farmer, started her maize crop with ordinary seeds bought from the market. She noticed her crop was relatively successful, but it was pretty ordinary. The maize struggled against the elements and the yield was never quite enough.

But, since she started attending the Kenya Seed forums at our centre, WilFridah’s crops have changed dramatically.

She adopted a new variety of maize and watched her production triple in just two seasons. WilFridah has also sourced new seeds from the Kenya Seed Company to incorporate sunflower and soybean into her dairy farming feed.

Thanks to WHISCA’s program, WilFridah’s farm is growing and thriving.
