Clean Water Project

WHISCA has partnered with a local group to connect the communities in Lugari with clean, accessible water.

The Musembe Community Water Project (MUCOWAP) and WHISCA have been working together since 2014 to find a solution to the problem of water scarcity in the region.

The project will supply an initial population of over 12,000 with clean water.

By 2037, we aim to reach over 22,000 people in the district.

Infrastructure for a Scarce Region

The village of Musembe and the surrounding districts in Lugari are water scarce. The main water sources are shallow wells and seasonal streams which dry up during dry seasons.

Community members are forced to walk long distances to the River Kipkarren in order to collect water.

Accessible water is essential to WHISCA programs like Sustainable Agriculture and Health.

COVID-19

Like many communities across the globe, Western Kenya has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The people of Lugari have persevered through the personal and economic losses of the past year, but poor sanitation practices continue to aid the spread of the virus.

WHISCA has set up hand-washing stations in the local market to encourage regular sanitation and attempt to curb the community spread (above left).

The Centre and its staff have also implemented distancing and increased sanitation practices to keep the community safe.
